I was listening to the radio the other day and the host mentioned the Epilady.Oh man.For those of your who aren't old enough to have used/remember Epilady, consider yourself lucky. It was this thing with a metal coil that pulled your hair out.Really.I mean, it HURT.I tried one out at Brookstone back in the day.
They never really caught on(big shocker there!).There have been similar products since(there is one that they advertise on TV all the time and I think you can buy them at places like Target too.
But the product(and its advertising) that makes me go WTF?! is the Mangroomer. It's a back hair remover that I've heard advertised.Used to be you bought them only over the phone, but now the ads say you can buy them at Target.Oh yeah.A guy with a hairy back is going to walk in Target and buy one of those :P
They had samples at See's(I was at UTC today)The first sample I tried was a blueberry truffle *points to subject line*. Now, I LOVE blueberries, but this was just nasty.I took one bite and had to throw it out. Then I tried a coffee truffle and I couldn't taste it-the fact I was drinking iced coffee at the time may have had something to do with it.
Then I had a salad for dinner tonight and put half of an avocado-from the tree in my backyard!- in and it was *glorious*. I love avocados. They're good for you, you know.

On the way home from UTC I stopped by Lou's Records.Looked for something in the used/video department(I couldn't find it) the went over to the main store. They have been doing a LOT of work on the main store, and I have to say that I like it. I like it a lot. It's got a much cleaner look now, to say that they have done a redo on the store would be putting it mildly. There used to be an office area, which has been moved to where the video store is now(and the video store is now in the same building with the used CD's.) The vinyl section is where the office used to be in the main building.
I'm so old that I remember when Lou's had a teensy store in Cardiff, then they moved to Encinitas(ahh I have so many memories of going to that store. That's where I bought a lot of my Duran Duran pins back in the day...)
The next best thing[/sarcasm]
I love YouTube.I can(and do)spend hours on there trying to find clips of old TV shows and whatnot. The place is a goldmine for Duran Duran stuff from back in the day though.Brings back lots of good memories, like this:
I was one of those fans that went insane over anything to do with the band. I need to scan the pictures of my closet doors from back in the day when they were covered-and I do mean covered-with Duran Duran posters. Some of the stuff I did back then seems insane to me now, like:
*Saving my lunch money so that I could get Duran Duran stuff-magazines,books, that sort of thing.Yes,I would go without lunch at school. It's not like the cafeteria food was any good *shrug* I'm amazed that I didn't faint from having low blood sugar.
*The day before they would play a new Duran Duran song, radio stations(usually KROQ out of L.A.) would announce what time they would play it the next day.I would bring my Walkman to school the next day,and right before the new song was played,I would ask to be excused and leave and go somewhere(usually the bathroom)to hear the new Duran Duran song.If my teachers knew, they didn't say anything(about which more in a minute)
*I had a ton of Duran Duran pins, and for Christmas of 1984 I got a denim jacket, which for some reason was THE things for Duranies to have.I put all of my pins on one side of the jacket and it was HEAVY(well,I did have a lot of pins!)I remember being told to take pins off because I had too many on.A liability, apparently.(After I saw Duran Duran at the San Diego Sports Arena on their '84 tour I poked a hole in the top of it and wore it as a necklace. My gym teacher said that I wasn't really supposed to wear it during gym-liability again- but she let me(she understood, since her daughter had been a Beatles fan as a kid)Another thing that was essential-and yep,I had one-was a fedora. They were a Duran style thing. That and having part of your hair-usually right in the front-dyed blonde like John Taylor(the man I was convinced that I would marry someday:P)did.
*I would try to work Duran Duran into everything-incuding my schoolwork, which led to several of my teachers telling me that I was obsessed with Duran Duran.Looking back on it,I was.I won't deny that.
*Duran Duran were pretty much the only band that I listened to for a few years back then. All of their contemporaries were pretenders to the throne in my opinion.
Unfortunately I was one of only a couple of people at my jr. high school that liked Duran Duran,so I bonded with the other people who did(there were a scant few of us as I recall.)
I was listening to one of the tapes of stuff I taped off the radio(remember those days?) and this
On the songmeanings website,it's interesting to see what people think this song means.
One person said that the monster is a metaphor for the father's life.
Another said that the father and the monster(Nessie?)are in sync-they feel each other and at the end of the song the monster in *him* is released.
I think that there's a sense of foreboding in the song-the fact the father has a sucky job is very evident in the song and it's starting to catch up to him.
When I was younger,I thought the last line "There's a shadow on the door of a cottage on the shore of a dark Scottish lake" was some embodiment of evil-or something that was created from the industrialisation mentioned in the song, thinking about it now-or just Nessie materalising,as I mentioned before at the father's house-the conscious-or subconscious- coming to the surface-figuratively and literally.
The Onion posted a list of movies that are too painful to watch more than once-I'm sorry to say I don't think I've seen any of the movies save for one-about which more in a minute. Leaving Las Vegas was on the list, as was Million Dollar Baby.I'd add The Last King Of Scotland to that list-great movie, well acted, written and directed,BUT I seriously could not watch that again. It's still messing with my head and it's been a few weeks since I saw it.
Anyways, one of the films on the list was When The Wind Blows-it was an animated movie about this elderly British couple who are dealing with the possibility of nuclear war(this movie,to give it its context was made in 1986).They lived through World War 2 so,they figure they can live through this.Well,it's not exactly that straightforward. It's difficult to watch-I hadn't see it in years and years and watched part of it on Youtube.I had forgotten how much it freaked me out back then(but you have to realise that it was a every day possibility back then).
Then,I was channel surfing last night and The Day After was on.Now THAT is a really weird coincidence.I remember losing a LOT of sleep after watching it back in the day(and TDA was groudbreaking for its time-it was graphic, and I seem to remember there was some criticism of that)It hit home because as I said, nuclear war was an every day possibility back then)
Of course there was a British version,Weeds(nothing to do with the show of the same name),which I've never seen so I don't know if it was as graphic as TDA, and by extension,War Games.
Got a few of my Christmas presents bought the other day.One of the presents was a Barbie doll for my niece Chloe.Yes, I consider myself a feminist but I don't follow the feminism rules.Much.In other words,I most certainly am not cut from the Gloria Steinem school of feminism :PNot that I have a problem with Gloria..I just don't feel as if we're on the same page where feminism is concerned all of the time.
I don't think Barbie presents a negative body image for little girls. That's why I'm surprised when I hear that parents won't let their daughters have Barbie dolls.I think there are more important things to be concerned about-like girls seeing these stick thin models and wanting to be like them..to be as stick thin as they are.I've never heard of that happening because they wanted to be like Barbie.I've heard of people having plastic surgery because they want to be like Barbie but I think that's something else entirely :P

Last night's Journeyman was really good but boy did it ever bring back memories.Kevin McKidd's character traveled back in time to October 1989-the Loma Prieta earthquake.I remember when that happened-I was watching the start of the A's/Giants game and all of a sudden the screen went black.I told my mom "I think something REALLY bad just happened.

So I've been trying to find a nice dressy top to wear for Thanksgiving at my brother's house. So far,I've kinda struck out(though I saw a possibility at Target,of all places!).I went to a Steve and Barry's and saw a cute top, which was certainly the right price(it was from Sarah Jessica Parker-yes,that one-'s- Bitten clothing line.)
The top was certainly cute enough, but I had to try several sizes on-the first was too tight around my arms(and you have to understand that these clothes go up to fairly large sizes which is wonderful,but..)I tried on an extra extra large which was WAY too big,and then an extra large, which was perfect, but I just thought it was WAY too frumpy on me.And it was a bit too long for my liking.
So Saturday I was at Target and they had some cute polo shirts for women there.I tried one on and..oh wow.I like! And the shirt gave me some serious curves!(though with all the work-going to the gym, etc. I've been doing I've been getting curves anyways!)
A few posts ago, I talked about caramel apples being a taste memory from my childhood.I know it's still a few days 'till the start of fall(and a few more after that 'till the first day of October),But I thought I'd post about my favourite fall taste memories(in no particular order)
