I went to Landmark in Hillcrest and saw Son Of Rambow.I really liked it.
I made chicken gumbo, from the most recent issue of Everyday Food, for dinner tonight. It didn't disappoint.Plus, it was very easy to make(you start out with oil, and then make a roux-and making a roux isn't tricky),then add the rest of the ingredients gradually.
For some reason,I have been having dreams about Travis-especially dreams about going to Travis concerts-lately.I must want to go to a Travis show, even though I just saw them at the end of November at the House of Blues.

I went to see Run,Fatboy Run today. It was really funny,I liked it a lot and may even go to see it again, which isn't something I do a lot.Being an anglophile,I loved the London setting, and seeing lots of British/Irish actors that I recognised,including-invisiblesparks will love this- Stephen Merchant,of Office fame-though it's kind of a blink and you'll miss it role.
Also,we only saw two previews-nice,compared to the 20 minutes they usually have-the first was the Sex and The City movie and the second was Son Of Rambow which I mentioned the other day.And having seen the preview for it,I can't wait! That is going to be a "cannot miss" movie to be sure.
I went to see Atonement today.I liked it. And this now means I have seen 3 of the five movies nominated for Best Picture(most years I see *one* at the most.)I left my house thinking I would get there in plenty of time, but in truth of fact I got there *just* as the movie was starting.Talk about great timing!
I saw Juno last night.Seriously-I have never been in such a crowded movie theater before.Usually there's room to move. Not so last night. It was like everyone wanted to go to the movie theater.Seriously.Anyways,I won't spoil the movie for anyone but I really liked it-a must-see for sure.
So.I saw The Golden Compass today. I LOVED it.The atheism/anti-religion message is still there,I mean it was pretty obvious to *me* when I was watching the movie, but maybe I was looking for it? ;).
I thought it was fairly faithful to the books-there were a few things that were changed,:
The beginning of the movie, which was NOT in the book. Also,Fra Pavel, not the Master of Jordan, poisons Lord Asriel's Tokay. The scene with Asriel and the scholars of Jordan is somewhat different as well..
Mrs. Coulter tells Lyra that she(Mrs. Coulter) is her mother, not John Faa.
Roger Parslow is actually two characters-Roger,and Tony Makrios. The film ends suddenly, before Lyra and Roger go to find Lord Asriel-the end of the first book will be at the start of the second film which will change the dynamics of the second film but I digress.
I thought that the daemons(yes,it's spelled correctly) were done perfectly-especially Mrs. Coulter's monkey daemon and Pantalmion(though I thought Pan changed a lot-which he can do to protect himself or whatever)but he changed a LOT.And I thought his voice was a little too high(he's male).
As for characters:
Lord Asriel was *excellently* cast(If Daniel Craig was not available Ralph Fiennes would have made a REALLY good Lord Asriel.)
Mrs. Coulter:Nicole Kidman IS Mrs. Coulter.Cold, NOT one bit maternal.Nicole is the opposite in real life:P
John Faa, Ma Costa and Lee Scoresby were as I picture them(*especially* Lee Scoresby. Now I'll always see Sam Elliott when I picture Lee Scoresby.)The same with Serafina Pekkala.Eva Green has a witchy look(that's not a slam,I swear!).Movie!Lyra is a little bit less feral than book!Lyra is :P
To summarise:I LOVED it-things were as they should be(though I have seen reviews of the films by hard-core fans of the books complaining that they changed too many things(I thought they got Bolvangar right on the mark-cold and clinical),Trollesund, and Iorek(though I thought Lyra was much closer to Iorek in the movie-much more of a bond between the two of therm.)
No lie, an actual headline on Yahoo this morning:Study:Diabetes patients find daily care as difficult as actually being diabetic.I agree, and disagree on this one.I guess it's how you approach being diabetic. Some days it's annoying, other days I'm able to deal with it.

Last night I dreamt that I was walking around my neighborhood and I randomly walked into this house and the people who lived there had turned it into a Bennigan's-type place-albeit a Bennigan's with a swimming pool !

Last night I watched The Last King Of Scotland.Wow.What an incredible movie.I can see why Forest Whitaker got an Academy Award for playing Idi Amin.Granted, the story is fiction(it's based on a book by Giles Foden) but Amin WAS real.
Nicholas Garrigan(James McAvoy)is a doctor newly graduated from med school. He decides to go to the first place his finger stops on his globe.Well, the second. The first is Canada. The second is Uganda.Wanna take a wild guess where he goes next? :P Through a series of circumstances he comes to work as personal physician to Idi Amin, and becomes a "trusted advisor" as well.
He is warned about what is going on by Stone(Simon McBurney)but chooses to ignore it.It's obvious from early on that he knows that there are things going on behind the scenes but either is very naive,or very much in denial.
It brings up questions of when does Garrigan realise what is going on?I don't think he's completely naive, but also there is something akin to(is?) Stockholm Syndrome going on with Garrigan.Absolutely he relates to Amin, but when he realises what's going on he has to try and get up enough nerve to try and get the hell out of Uganda.
So I saw Sicko on Friday.I *heart* Michael Moore. Even if you disagree with most of what he says, you have to admit that he makes some really good points in this movie. And seeing the way the health care system works in other countries makes me jealous that what we have is so.. searches for a word and settles on "crap".
Guess who got to see the new Harry Potter movie today? That would be *me*!

I enjoyed the hell out of it, so many memorable things
*Ron's brothers
*Dolores Umbridge(and her kitty cat plates which had me LMAO every time)
*Snape(though I suspect he's used for comic relief more than anything else..in the films anyways)
*The Dursleys(I don't know who's more assholish-Mr. Dursley or Dudley) Thank you to the filmmakers for keeping the Dursley content to a minimum.A little of them goes a long way :P)
*Luna Lovegood-Under that weird exterior is a completely different person.
*Sirius Black- I *heart* Gary Oldman. That is all.
Something kept waking me up last night. It was the strangest thing.
I saw Ratatouille yesterday.Lovedlovedloved it.Go see it!I was one of the only people that didn't have a kid in tow in the theater(not that I minded).
